Project Overview
Offshore service vessels operate in a different world from cruise ships or tankers — accommodation blocks packed close to machinery spaces, deck cargo areas, and helidecks, often far from any port and entirely reliant on their own onboard systems if something goes wrong.
For one offshore service vessel, I worked with a supplier of a sprinkler system covering the accommodation and machinery spaces most critical to crew safety. The brief was straightforward but demanding: a system that would activate quickly, deliver reliable water discharge under pressure, and integrate cleanly with the vessel's existing fire detection and alarm network so that a sprinkler release and a fire alarm response happen as one coordinated event rather than two separate systems reacting independently.
Space and weight were constant considerations. Offshore vessels carry a dense mix of piping, cabling, and mechanical systems in a comparatively compact hull, so the sprinkler pipework had to be routed to give full coverage of protected spaces without competing for space with other critical systems or compromising maintenance access. Zone valves were positioned to allow crew to isolate individual sections for testing and maintenance without shutting down protection across the rest of the vessel.
Integrated with the ship's fire detection panel, the sprinkler system now gives the crew automatic, zone-specific fire suppression in the areas where they live and work — a critical layer of protection on a vessel that may be days from the nearest port when an emergency strikes.
