Enclosed and confined spaces on vessels present some of the highest-consequence risks in marine operations, and gas detection is one of the few controls standing between a routine entry and a fatality.
Sensor placement should follow gas behavior, not convenience. Detectors for gases heavier than air belong low in the space; detectors for lighter gases belong high. A single mid-height sensor is a common shortcut that misses the actual accumulation pattern.
Calibration and bump testing discipline is where most gas detection programs quietly fail. A detector that hasn't been bump-tested recently can give a false sense of security that's worse than having no detector at all, because it removes the instinct to verify manually.
Redundancy for permit-to-work entries matters. Fixed detection plus a portable, independently calibrated unit carried by the entry team catches failures that a single system, however well maintained, can miss.
The technical specification is only half the system. Crew training on interpreting readings, response thresholds, and evacuation triggers is what actually converts a detection system into a safety outcome.
