There's no single correct sewage treatment technology for every vessel — the right system depends on passenger and crew capacity, operating region, and how much space and power the vessel can realistically dedicate to treatment.
Biological treatment systems suit vessels with fairly steady occupancy, such as cruise ships and larger commercial vessels, where consistent loading lets the biological process establish and maintain itself effectively.
Physical-chemical systems tend to fit vessels with more variable occupancy or shorter voyage patterns, since they respond faster to fluctuating load than biological systems, which need time to stabilize after a change in usage.
Discharge zone requirements should be confirmed early, not assumed. MARPOL Annex IV special area requirements and coastal state rules vary, and a system compliant in one operating region may fall short in another without additional treatment stages.
Space and power budget is often the real deciding factor in practice. The technically ideal system is only useful if it fits the vessel's footprint and available power without displacing other essential systems.
